What is a way to know that a product is NOT tested on animals?

I know that some products have it indicated on the back of their lable clearly stating "This product is not tested on animals." But what if a product does not have that written on it? Should I assume that it IS tested on animals, or is there a way to be certain?

Do research, even on products that state they are not. Companies tend to stretch the truth if it helps profits
